Todd Baker & NFPA

December 2016 - Todd Baker & NFPA

HorizonPSI is proud to announce that our Technical Director, Todd Baker, has been appointed as a member of the National Fire Protection Association 652 Standard for the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust Technical Committee. Todd’s experience in dry bulk material handling and pneumatic conveying in a wide variety of industries was  a key factor in his appointment.

The 652 committee is composed completely of volunteer experts that work to develop standards to ensure safety in regards to combustible dust. Todd’s involvement allows us to be very aware of new and existing safety standards.

“Being aware of combustible dust hazards is especially important in the winter. When the air becomes dry it creates prime conditions for explosions”, says Todd Baker. Starkly reminding us, in February of 2008 a sugar mill in Georgia exploded due to unsafe enclosures and collections of combustible dust throughout the mill. The explosion took 14 people’s lives and left an addition 38 injured, according to the final CSB report.Although NFPA does not currently issue citations or fines, therecommendations they make could save countless lives and millions of dollars in damage from these types of explosions.

To learn more about the dangers of combustible dust and to see if you are complying with all NFPA Standards reach out to our Technical Director Todd Baker at tbaker@horizonpsi.com or (785) 856 - 8110.
